The Occlusion Layer:
AR Experiences of Hidden Los Angeles History

Critic and historian Norman Klein calls Los Angeles a city of “erasures and collective forgetting.” The Occlusion Layer employs Augmented Reality’s ability to reveal visual and audio experiences to illustrate histories of LA that are hidden behind plaques around Los Angeles.

Through the Snapchat app or Snap Spectacles, viewers of The Occlusion Layer will discover AR “floats” made of paper that represent key moments of hidden LA history.

The first lens prototype brings attention to the 1871 Chinese Massacre, during which 19 Chinese immigrants were killed by a mostly white mob on the Calle de los Negros—now known as Los Angeles Street.
